MARATHON GOLD FOR WANJIRU
Kenya's men made it a clean sweep of middle and long distance running after Sammy Wanjiru broke the Olympic record to claim gold in the marathon on Sunday morning.

The 22-year-old, who only made his marathon debut last year, crossed the line in 2hr 6min 32 seconds.

Morocco's Jaouad Gharib took silver in 2hrs 7min 16secs with fast-finishing Tsegay Kebede of Ethiopia third.

Wanjiru ensured a fast early pace as he and compatriot Martin Lel whittled the leaders down to just eight in the first five miles - Spain's Cheme Martinez the only non-African.

He then upped the pace again on 11 miles to reduce the pack to five before Gharib's spurt saw him, Wanjiru and Deriba Merga draw away again.

But Wanjiru always looked the stronger of the trio and he eased home as Merga fell away, with Britain's Dan Robinson 24th in 2:16.14.
