CRASH COSTS KILLEEN
AbsalonGreat Britain's Liam Killeen missed out on a medal for the second Olympics in a row after an opening lap fall in the men's mountain biking.

The 26-year-old, who went over his handlebars in Athens, came home seventh in Beijing, two minutes and 22 seconds off the time needed for a bronze medal.

Defending champion and four-time world champion Julien Absalon of France led from the start to retain his title with a controlled ride.

Absalon came home one minute, seven seconds ahead of compatriot Jean-Christophe Peraud, with Switzerland's Nino Schurter securing bronze.

"It was one of those things that happen in bike racing," said Killeen. "You can be upright one minute, the next you're on the floor.

"I had an unfortunate first 300 metres. I was trying to battle to the front but unfortunately 40 other guys were trying to do the same thing."
