DALEY DIVES TO SEVENTH
British teenage diver Tom Daley came home a creditable seventh in the 10m platform final which was won by Australia's Matthew Mitcham.
The 14-year-old began well and was joint-fourth after the first round of dives before gradually slipping down the rankings as the competition progressed.
Daley began well as he nailed a back two-and-a-half somersault with one-and-half twists with a pike to score 81.6.
He then posted 78 for his second dive before slipping down after round three, but his fifth dive, a back three-and-a-half somersault with tuck, took him back up to sixth position. His last dive was poor, scoring just 64.6 to leave him on 463.55 overall, although that was enough to make him the top ranked British diver.
Mitcham took the gold thanks to his penultimate dive of 112.10 - the highest score of the Games - to lift him above long-time leader Zhou Luxin of China.
Daley was satisfied with his performance, saying: "It was great. I enjoyed myself all the way through. There were some dives I did miss but I still loved every second of it. I was nervous but good nerves with lots of adrenaline - which was good as I had done all the hard work of getting through."
